Accidental Collage
KR Moorhead is an AuDHD, gender-defiant, writer, artist and creative facilitator. Originally from the colonised territory of the Lenni Lenape people, they've been living in Norwich, UK for over 20 years. They spent fifteen years as a writer and Creative Writing academic before choosing to leave their lecturing position to develop their own independent, neuroqueer learning spaces through Neuroqueer Creative Studios, and to dedicate time to their own creative practices.

As a kid, I regularly engaged with all kinds of creative practices: visual art, writing, theatre, music, dance... But when I started university it seemed as though I had to 'choose one' - and by choosing to focus on writing and literature, I basically gave up on all the rest. Recently, in my early forties, I have had the pleasure of spending time in a variety of creative practice spaces, facilitated by some amazing creative practitioners, through the Neuroqueer Creative community. In these low-pressure, process oriented spaces, I had the opportunity to reconnect with a love of visual art-making, and experiment with collage as a medium.
I got addicted to the collage process, and one day realised that I had made a new collage every day for a whole week, without even meaning to. So, I decided to see if I could continue to make a collage every day for a full 30 days, and what I might learn in the process. At the end of that month, I had a whole portfolio - and was suddenly (accidentally) a collage artist.
For me, the joy of collage comes from two things: its dual nature as both deconstructive and constructive - you take what is already there, take it apart, and build something new, and the limitations and constraints of the materials - I can only use what I can physically find. This is why I choose to only use materials that already exist and I do not download or print elements. I find all of my materials, including 90% of my cardstock, in charity and vintage shops, and do not digitally manipulate my images.
Since that 30-day challenge, I have continued to make collages (maybe not every day!) and now my art, cards and prints are available online, in brick & mortar shops, and at in-person fairs & markets.
